Week 1 – Making of | Semana 1

In a way I belive it was this quote – from The Night Circus’ by Erin Morgenstern

“I made a wish on this tree years ago'[…]

‘What did you wish for?’ Bailey asks…

‘I wished for her,’ he says”

that sparked this project to life. I loved the idea of the ‘Wishing Tree’ and was captivated by it. Though I read the book (like the vast majority of the books on this project) on my Kindle, I not only highlighted it there but also copied it to my small Moleskine. So it sat there for almost 2 years.

When the idea for a new project came to mind and I thought of joining literature and photography for Visual 56, this quote was naturally the first that popped up.

I have to say this is still one of my favorite books to date. I loved that it is not confined to the United States as so many american books are; that Erin Morgenstern – the author- uses so many french words and other cultures to give it a much more whole sense of the world; and that there is so much magic – but never the cheap kind. It is one of these books that lives on in your imagination for a long time after you finished it.

And I still wish I could visit ‘Les Cirque des Rêves’ in real life and meet all the characters in this much beloved book. I really loved it.

In case you haven’t read it yet, please do. It is a great book! 🙂

So, for the challenge. First I needed the dress, the kind that one color fades into another. I didn’t have that, obviously. But, unlike my project 365, there was Photoshop to the rescue! 😀 My model, who was my wedding photography assistant for a while, came for an afternoon and after much editing and work I ended up with the two images below. I wasn’t sure which one would work best in the final image:

Then came the Wishing Tree. In spite of how much help Photoshop is, I still use it reluctantly. As much as I can I like to make things happen in camera. Since I couldn’t find the transparent christmas balls anywhere I asked for help of a group of friends who most graciously showed me where I could find them in my hometown. After setting up the whole scenario to see if it would work I invited my friend Paul to be my model. The shot needed to be at night on account of the light and the image I had in mind for the final product and it took us a few attempts in order to make it work as we only had 4 dry days the whole month!!

Thank God it all worked out in the end, and with the help of my friend Lilian, acting as my assistant we took the shot that allowed me to produced the final image. You can see a bit of how it was done in the image below. 🙂

I hope you enjoyed learning a little about the process of how to make an image. It is never as simple as it looks! And I’m very thankful to all my wonderful friends who have allowed me to use them as models for my crazy project! 😀

____________________________________________________
