Week 7’s quote comes from one of my all time favourite books and written by a writer who has greatly influenced me as I was growing up.

I found George MacDonald’s books at that wonderful library I used to visit every school holidays. And his books were always among the 30 or so I’d check out. I read, and now own, all of them as far as I know. 🙂 His books challenged me to be a better person, to treat everyone well, to keep my word and seek the way of wisdom. And interesting enough, that death is not be feared if you walk with God but almost something to look forward to. Not in a suicide-I-want-to-die kind of way but in a beginning-of-real-life kind of way. I know it sounds funny, but if you read more than one of his book you’ll know what I mean.

I’ve always loved fairytales and this one is my favorite. The story of a little boy named Diamond who befriends the North Wind and is taken on her back (yes, the wind is a woman) and has many adventures. The back of this edition reads “One night [Diamond] hears the voice of the North Wind. She appears at one moment as herself, but can change into  many shapes, sometimes appearing beautiful but other times fearsome.” There are so many gold-nuggets of wisdom in this book it’s hard to know what to share. In any case, this quote is one of the many that stood out to me ever since I read it, about 20 years ago. This is the hardback I’ve owned and loved since then. I think the cover (by Dan Thornberg) is so beautiful. But the story is even more beautiful. 🙂

The way this book ended up with me is a wonderful story. One day, as I had done many times since I discovered that library, I went to check some books out only to find out they were closing it and donating the books to whoever could carry them. I could not believe my ears. At that time there were no cell phones (am I betraying how old I am with this story? 😀 ) so I called my family from a pay phone to let them know (I was on my way to class) and we went back there with the car and we got boxes full of all the books we wanted and could carry! I don’t know how many books I got that day but it was like Christmas to me! 🙂

As I thought about including this quote in the project I wondered how to make it work. Since the concept reminded me of ‘The Strange case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde’ by Robert Louis Stevenson and Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray‘ (both great books if you want to read them) I thought I’d go with the idea of portrait with a scary looking shadow behind. So I called my friend Ju Friedrich, an amazing make up artist in her own right, to be my model. She went above and beyond anything I could have asked her for. She got a full dress from a Goodwill-type of store that worked perfectly for the shoot. I wanted a victorian looking outfit and matching hairstyle. Together we picked the outfit (thank God for Whatsapp!) and did her hair. Which by the way, was a perfect color for the shoot! 😀 This was the result.

Then we proceeded to the shadow idea. We shot a few variations of the image below:

After we were done, or so I thought, we just goofed around with her making faces. I wasn’t sure I was going to use it. But when I shot this photo I loved it so much that we took a few more. I love when I get other creatives in the photoshoot with me! It’s like creativity gets multiplied! I know the final image looks like she was all made up with scary make up but this couldn’t be further from the truth! She kept the same make up the entire shoot, I only edited the images differently and worked out the layers on photoshop to give me the result I wanted. 🙂

Then we shot some more ‘glamour’ shots just because. And I loved this image below. I edited to look just like one of those old fashioned photographs and I was really pleased with how it came out.

I ended up not using the shadow pictures and went in a different direction but we had so much fun shooting I’ll see if I can use the images somewhere else. We even took an ‘usie’ after we were done. 😀 Myself, Ju and Ana Laura, my wonderful assistant!

And here’s the setup I used for the portraits. For the shadow on the wall I used the bare flash on the floor. This way the shadow projected in a size I could use.

So far this has been one of the most fun shoots I’ve had for this project and I can only thank Ju and Ana Laura for the great time and the images that came out! Team work is awesome!

A frase da 7a. semana veio de um dos meu livros favoritos de todos os tempos. E foi escrito por um autor que teve um grande influência sobre mim quando eu estava crescendo.

Encontrei os livros de George MacDonald naquela biblioteca maravilhosa que eu visitava todas as férias escolares. Seus livros estavam sempre entre os 30 (mais ou menos) que eu emprestava. Li seus livros, e agora tenho todos – que eu saiba pelo menos. 🙂 Os livros dele me desafiaram a ser uma pessoa melhor, a tratar bem todas as pessoas, a cumprir minha palavra e buscar o caminho da Sabedoria. Estranhamente também me ensinou que a morte não era algo a ser temido se você anda com Deus, mas quase algo pelo qual se anseia. Não em um estilo suicida, ‘odeio minha vida, quero morrer’, mas em um estilo de ‘começo da vida real’. Eu sei que parece estranho, mas se você ler mais do que um livro dele vai entender o que estou falando.

Sempre amei contos de fadas e este é um dos meus favoritos. É a história de um menininho chamado  Diamond que fica amigo do Vento do Norte e é levado nas costas dela (sim, o vento é uma mulher) e tem muitas aventuras. Na contra-capa desta edição que tenho está escrito;  ‘Uma noite [Diamond] ouve a voz do Vento Norte. Em dado momento ela aparece como ela mesma, mas pode mudar de forma; ora se mostrando linda, outras vezes assustadora.” Há tantas ‘pepitas de sabedoria’ neste livro que é difícil escolher o que compartilhar. De qualquer forma, a frase que escolhi é uma das muitas que me chamaram atenção desde que li o livro a primeira vez, há mais ou menos 20 anos atrás. A primeira foto deste post é do livro físico que li e tenho amado desde então. Eu acho a capa (pintada por Dan Thornberg) linda. Mas a história é mais linda ainda. 🙂

Como este livro veio parar nas minhas mãos é uma história muito legal. Um dia, como fazia muitas vezes desde que descobri esta biblioteca, fui emprestar alguns livros e descobri que estavam fechando e doando os livros para quem quisesse. Pirei. Na época não existiam celulares (será que estou mostrando minha idade com esta história? 😀 ) então liguei para minha família de um telefone público (eu estava indo para a aula), e avisei. Voltamos lá no mesmo dia com o carro e trouxemos algumas caixas cheias de livros que queríamos e conseguíamos carregar. Não sei quantos livros ganhei naquele dia mas para mim foi melhor do que o Natal! 🙂

Quando pensei em incluir esta frase no projeto fiquei matutando como fazer a imagem ‘funcionar’. Como o conceito me lembrava de ‘O estranho caso de Dr. Jekyll e Sr. Hyde’ de Robert Louis Stevenson e do livro ‘O retrato de Dorian Gray’ de Oscar Wilde (ambos são livros muito bons se quiser lê-los) pensei na idéia de um retrato inocente com uma sombra assustadora por trás. Sabendo que precisaria de alguém que soubesse representar um pouco, chamei minha amiga Ju Friedrich, uma super mega maquiadora, para ser minha modelo. Ela fez mais ainda do que eu esperava e conseguiu um vestido em um brechó que encaixou perfeitamente na idéia que eu tinha para a foto. A idéia era uma roupa e cabelo no estilo vitoriano. Juntas escolhemos o vestido (bendito Whatsapp!) e ela fez o cabelo, que falando nisto estava com a cor perfeita para a foto! 😀 O resultado você pode ver na segunda foto.

Depois disto trabalhamos com a idéia da sombra. Fotografei algumas variações da terceira imagem e depois que terminamos – ou melhor, pensei que tínhamos terminado – brincamos com ela fazendo umas caretas. Eu não tinha certeza se ia usar, mas quando fiz a quarta imagem deste post achei que ficou tão legal que tiramos mais algumas.

Por isto eu amo trabalhar com outros artistas, adoro quando a criatividade se multiplica! Sei que a imagem final parece que ela está com uma maquiagem assustadora, mas não foi o caso. Ela ficou com a mesma maquiagem o tempo todo, a diferença foi a luz, edição e a montagem das camadas no photoshop para chegar no resultado que eu queria. 🙂

No final tiramos alguns retratos mais bem-comportados só para nos divertirmos e eu amei a imagem dela em preto e branco. Editei para ficar com cara daquelas imagens antigas e fiquei muito feliz com o resultado.

Acabei não usando as fotos com a sombra desta vez mas nos divertimos tanto no ensaio que vou ver se consigo usar estas fotos em outra imagem. Até fizemos um ‘usie’ quando terminamos. 😀 Eu, a Ju e a Ana Laura, minha assistente-mor!

A última foto é o setup que usei para os retratos. Para a sombra na parede usei o flash puro abaixo da modelo que estava sentada no chão. Assim eu conseguia projetar no tamanho que precisava para usar (ou não) depois. Até aqui este foi um dos ensaios mais divertidos que fiz para este projeto e só posso agradecer a Ju e a Ana Laura pelo tempo gostoso e pelas imagens que saíram! Trabalhar em equipe é muito bom mesmo!
