Éowyn Ivey’s book was on my wishlist for a long time before I purchased it. I loved the title (because it reminded me of Andersen’s ‘The Snow Queen’), loved the idea of the book (a fairy child) and loved the author’s name. As a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, Éowyn is my favorite woman character from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ so the author’s name definitely drew me. Specially considering that around the time I bought this book I used to go over the list of books looking at author’s names because I was on the hunt for non-western and non-american books. I suppose I still am, just not as actively as I did for a while.

Back to the subject.

The book is about an older couple who lost a child to miscarriage a few years back and has now moved to Alaska – a tough and rugged but beautiful place. One evening, as it snows ‘the perfect snowman kind of snow’ they build a little snow child, complete with a carved face, hair, mittens and a red scarf. The child somehow becomes real and the childless couple at last have a little girl that comes and goes and, as much as possible, they call their own. As one of the characters says in the book ‘in my old age, I see that life itself is often more fantastic and terrible than the stories we believed as children, and that perhaps there is no harm in finding magic among the trees.’  As the story progresses you see hope breathing life back into their hearts and they both come back to life. This feeling permeates the novel and maybe that’s why from all the quotes I underlined I chose this one to make an image from.

I knew how I wanted the final image to look. I wasn’t sure how to make it. First I had to find a good model for a bird (the thing with feathers), so I scoured Pinterest. I found a couple of them and after some research decided to try the wool bird. It turned out to be quite simple and much easier than I had anticipated. However, seeing that I wasn’t sure which background I was going to use and wanting to make sure the bird came out as good as possible I made 4 different ones. You can see 3 of them, including the one I used, on the image below.

Then I talked to my friend who – with the prettiest smile, coolest hair and biggest heart – agreed to pose for me and we shot some pictures of her.

Because I wanted a soft look for the picture at first I used a piece of tulle in front of the lens. But ended up using one of the pictures I had not used it in since the contrast was too sharp between the inside and outside of her ribcage with the bird in it.

A side note: If you’re following this project you have probably noticed I hardly ever use more than one light. Many people think that in order to have good pictures you have to have a paraphernalia of equipment and big lights. That, my friend, is not true. Of course you can use a lot of equipment, but most of the time you don’t need it. What you need is a good understanding of light and how to use it in order to give you the result you want. Throw in some vision and creativity for good measure and you can come out with beautiful images! 🙂

End of side note.

I went back to the same store I got the feathers for week 9 and bought this piece of green/turquoise fabric with small flowers in it which I loved. And the white bird looked specially good and contrasty in it. 🙂 I stuck it to the inside of a cardboard box and put the best branch I could sit the bird on inside it. Then my mom was kind enough to help me by holding the branch in place for me to photograph. Isn’t she lovely? 🙂 She’s quite amazing, this woman. And I’m not just saying that because she’s my mom. 🙂

O livro de Éowyn Ivey  ficou na minha lista de desejos por um bom tempo antes que eu finalmente comprasse. Amei o título (porque me lembrou da ‘A Rainha da Neve’ de Hans Christian Andersen), amei a idéia do livro (uma criança meio fada) e o nome da autora. 🙂 Como grande fã dos livros do Tolkien, Éowyn é a minha protagonista feminina preferida da trilogia do ‘Senhor dos Anéis’, por isto a atração pelo nome. Junte-se a isto o fato de que quando comprei este livro eu costumava buscar pelos nomes escritores que não fossem americanos ou ocidentais. Ainda faço isto, só não tanto quanto naquela época.

Voltando ao assunto.

O livro é a história de um casal mais velho que perdeu um bebê por aborto espontânea há muitos anos e nunca teve outros filhos. Eles se mudam para o Alaska, um lugar difícil mas muito bonito. Uma noite, enquanto neva ‘a neve perfeita para fazer um boneco de neve’ eles constroem uma criança de neve, colocam cabelo, esculpem o rosto e colocam luvas e um cachecol vermelho. De alguma forma durante a noite, a criança se torna real e o casal que não tinha filhos se vê com uma menina – que vai e vem – que, na medida do possível, tratam como se fosse sua. Como diz uma personagem do livro: ‘na minha idade já avançada vejo que a vida em si é mais fantástica e terrível do que as histórias que acreditávamos quando crianças. Que talvez não haja mal em descobrir mágica entre as árvores.” Á medida em que a estória progride você vê a esperança tomando forma novamente nos corações do casal. Esta é uma sensação que permeia o livro e talvez seja por isto que, de todas as coisas que sublinhei, escolhi esta para desenvolver uma imagem.

Eu sabia como queria que ficasse a imagem final. Mas não tinha certeza de como fazê-lo. Primeiro eu precisava de um bom modelo para o pássaro (a coisa com penas) então vasculhei o Pinterest. Descobri dois modelos que gostei mais mas decidi usar o pássaro de lã. Fazê-lo foi mais simples e fácil do que eu imaginava. No entanto, como não sabia que fundo iria usar e querendo deixá-lo o melhor possível fiz quatro modelos diferentes. Você pode ver três deles, incluindo o que eu usei, na primeira foto deste post.

Falei com a minha amiga que – com o sorriso mais bonito, o cabelo mais legal e um coração enorme – concordou em ser minha modelo e tiramos as fotos. Como eu queria uma imagem mais suave usei um pedaço de tule na frente da lente. Mas acabei usando uma das fotos sem o tule porque o contraste ficou muito grande entre o lado de fora e o lado de dentro, onde o pássaro estava.

Um parêntese: se você tem seguido este projeto provavelmente já percebeu que quase nunca uso mais do que uma luz. Muitas pessoas acham que para tirar boas fotos você precisa ter uma parafernália de equipamento e luzes grandes de estúdio. Isto, meu amigo, simplesmente não é verdade. Claro que você pode usar vários equipamentos, mas a maioria do tempo você não precisará deles. O que você precisa é entender como funciona a luz e como usá-la para obter o resultado que está procurando. Junte-se a isto sua visão pessoal e criatividade e você pode fazer lindas imagens! 🙂

Fim do parêntese.

Voltei na mesma lojinha onde consegui as penas para a foto da semana 9 e comprei este tecido verde/turquesa com pequenas flores que amei. O pássaro branco ficou especialmente legal neste fundo com todo este contraste. 🙂 Prendi o pano em uma caixa de papelão e coloquei o melhor galho que pude achar para acomodar o passarinho. Minha mãe foi uma querida e me ajudou segurando o galho no lugar certo para que eu pudesse fotografar, não é uma querida? 🙂 Ele é muito incrível, esta mulher. E não estou falando isto só porque ela é minha mãe, não. 🙂

A última foto do post foi a imagem final do passarinho usando luz natural e locação externa.

Juntei tudo no photoshop e demorei um tempo até descobrir como fazer o rombo no peito onde aparece a esperança empoleirada parecer mais realista. Espero que você tenha curtido o resultado tanto quanto eu. Da minha parte tenho que dizer que gostei tanto do processo quanto do resultado.
