The pursuit of excellency | A busca da excelência

(português abaixo)

No, this is not a normal post as you can see.

I know. I know. Today is the day I’m supposed to post the week’s image. Except that I won’t. You see, what happened was that the image I had in mind didn’t work as well as I’d hoped. So I decided to postpone it and keep working on it for another week. This way I’m sure that what comes out keeps the standard I’ve set for my own work. Of course not every image I create has the same impact, but as I grow, work and create, I learn. And I realized I don’t have to post something just because it has to be done. There are higher standards to hold on to than being punctual with one’s art. For me quality and excellency are two of them.

This a first for me, and looking back I could have used another week even with a couple of images from this very project. But it is a learning process. One I’m constantly navigating and exploring. And my aim is not only to produce beautiful art and imagery but to come out the other end much more mature and better in my craft. This is the path I’ve set out for myself.

I see far too many of us being less critical than they should be about their own work. We put something out and, even if it’s awful, we expect high praise and likes and accolades from others. It’s the social media equivalent of the kindergarten mindset. Whatever you do is wonderful. Even if it’s actually awful.

Well, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that real life doesn’t work that way. If we want to grow and get better we have to be willing, sometimes even seek out, criticism. Seek out people you admire or who you consider have good taste and can help you and ask them to review your work for you and ask you the hard questions. It might not be pleasant when it’s happening but I guarantee if you take their advice to heart you will come out a hundred times better for it.

Now, since I’m not releasing the final image, here’s a little something just to make you curious as to the direction I’m taking. 😉 In the meantime I’ll keep working.

É a primeira vez que me permito fazer isto.

😉 Enquanto isto, continuo trabalhando.
